North Downs Way – Day 3

Dorking to Caterham

I was a bit wary about today, the weather forecast was for very hot conditions. In the end though, I ended up fresher than I did the day before.

I was up early in order to get going before it got hot. I walked down to the station and got the 7:30 train to Boxhill & Westhumble. I was at the start by 7:50. Immediately confronted by stepping stones across the River Mole. Quite deep! Anyway I got over ok and was then met by 273 steps up Box Hill. I stated counting but got lost around 100. After a few stops I got to the top and was greeted by a wonderful view of Dorking.

From that point on the route is mainly up and down through woodland, past a lime works and up some steep inclines.

at the top of h last hill I turn right, the roar of traffic tells me I am not far from the M25. The trail opens out for an amazing view. I also pass Reigate Fort before ending up at my lunch spot Junction 8 cafe which also has a great view.

From here I walk through Gatton Park and down towards a private school. I go the wrong way around but meet back up with the trail on the other side. I then head across a golf course before getting to Merstham. From here I head left anc then right over the M25 before passing a church and doing some foot slogging down a hot pavement by some rich looking houses. I turn left here and follow the trail under the M23 before heading up and over a field baking in the sun.

The trail continues along some hot dusty tracks before eventually reaching the Caterham Viewpoint. It is here I part company with the trail and head to meet up with Rob for some food and beer before staying at the Travelodge.

16 more miles completed, roll on tomorrow!
